Dear African ILLALAs,
I bring you greetings and warm
regards from a section of the ICAE and ILALLA family which met in the beautiful
city of Porto Alegre, Brazil from 24 to 30 January 2012. First and foremost, I kindly request you to
read this mail until the last word. Before I get further, let me let you know
that I am Robert Jjuuko, a graduate of ILALLA III.
As you are perhaps aware,
Brazil will host the Rio+20 United
Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD). Indeed, a multitude of
activities are being undertaken by social movements to influence the outcome of
this conference. Alongside, its
important participation in this year’s Thematic Social Forum in Porto Alegre (which among others greatly dealt with issues
of capitalist crisis and social justice in relation to the UNCSD) ICAE
organised a postgraduate ILALLA course which I and 3 other African ILALLA
graduates (Aminata – Burkina Faso, Gebre-Ethiopia & Valeria – Mozambique) were
privileged to attend. The three African
colleagues asked me to write this mail to you.
During the deliberations, it
was noted with great concern that African voices are yet to be firmly
represented in global discussions including those inspired / organised by civil
society movements. It was further noted that there seem to be limited sharing
and interactions amongst African activists especially those involved in the
right to education campaigns. The challenges of inadequate resources,
notwithstanding everyone decried the lack of a vibrant mechanism to link African
processes and struggles. However, we were all quick to suggest some kind of
virtual exchange amongst the ILALLA graduates and other like-minded individuals
within and outside Africa.
This mail serves to invite you
to renew your interest to interact and relate with the rest of the African
ILALLAs as a launch pad for forging closer micro linkages not only for advocacy
purposes but professional and career development as well. I will soon send you
an invitation to join a simple platform (yammer) specially created to
facilitate an exchange between us (the IALLAs and other liked mind
individuals). Meanwhile, I take the opportunity to encourage you to take part (in
whatever form) in the preparations towards Rio+20.
I was kindly wondering whether
you will feel able to let me know your thoughts about this proposal for us to
get closer to each other in our efforts to contribute to the creation of a
world worth living in.
Thank you very much for
accepting to read this mail to the end. I am eagerly looking forward to your
response and cooperation. This is a friendly and voluntary call; please feel
free to share your thoughts. Remember to copy in everyone on the distribution
list (African ILALLAs).
With warm regards,
Robert
